The Omnipotence of Dream Variation on Extraction, 2024 Acrylic wash, watercolour, coloured pencil, gesso on Lokta paper, 79 x 53 cm To mark the centenary since Andre Breton wrote the Manifesto of Surrealism, I was asked by artist and curator David Handcock to develop a piece in response to Surrealist Marion Adnams’ ‘Variation on Red’, 1949, as a part of the exhibition The Omnipotence of Dream at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, Oct 2024 - Feb 2025, bringing out lesser known work in their collection of Adnams, Eileen Agar, John Tunnard, Ann Fordham, Allan Milner and Elizabeth Frink. Breton's Manifesto of Surrealism is a landmark text that remains as relevant today as when it was originally written. The continued influence of Surrealism has offered an exploration of intersectionality, highlighting the movement’s continued ability to both inspire and present a safe space, a marvellous realm on the cusp of dream and reality, a playground for artists. The collection at Salford Museum & Art Gallery contains a wealth of British Surrealist treasures, who followed the movement’s concepts, incorporating these themes into their own visual language. The Omnipotence of Dream presents six works carefully selected from the collection, some exhibited for the first time, and presented alongside responses from 16 contemporary artists. At the heart of the exhibition is a solo presentation by David Hancock with a body of work drawing directly from the collection.
